Many owners assume a #1 Google ranking carries over to AI answers. Often it does not.
What our research found
In our research, many local businesses were never named by ChatGPT (OpenAI).
We asked ChatGPT (OpenAI) the kinds of questions customers ask, like where to eat or shop, across business districts in every province.
Many independent businesses were never named at all.
In our Ontario study of 2,000 businesses, 287 of the 638 businesses in Google's Top 3 (45.0%) were not mentioned by AI.
Both studies are linked below.
Does ranking #1 on Google mean ChatGPT will recommend me?
No. A #1 ranking helps people find you on Google. It does not decide what ChatGPT (OpenAI) says.
Google ranks pages and listings. ChatGPT (OpenAI) writes a short answer and names a few businesses it can describe with confidence.
Clear services, consistent listings, reviews and outside mentions all help with that.
What to do about it
- Check both: search Google and ask ChatGPT (OpenAI) the same customer questions.
- Write down which businesses each one names.
- Make your services, location and hours clear and the same everywhere.
- Keep earning reviews and answer them.
- Re-check the same questions every few weeks.
Questions people ask
- Do Google rankings and ChatGPT recommendations always agree?
- No. Google and ChatGPT (OpenAI) pick businesses in different ways. The business at the top of Google is often not the one ChatGPT names.
- Does ranking number one on Google mean ChatGPT will recommend my business?
- No. Google rank and ChatGPT (OpenAI) answers are picked in different ways. You can rank first and still not be named.
- Why do they disagree?
- Google ranks pages and map listings. ChatGPT (OpenAI) writes a short answer from many public sources and names only a few businesses.
- Should I stop working on Google?
- No. Google still sends many customers. Treat AI answers as a second place to check, not a replacement.

- How do I get ChatGPT or Google AI to mention my business?
- We start by looking at your Recommendation Readiness. Think of it like your business's online résumé and references. Your website explains what you do, your listings establish the details, and your reviews and other sources provide supporting evidence. Clixera looks at that whole picture, identifies what is missing or unclear, and gives you the improvements to work on. Then we test whether you're appearing in the answers that matter to your customers.
