Businesses often assume a strong Google rank means they will also be named when customers ask AI systems for a recommendation. Those are related surfaces — not the same outcome.
Among businesses with measurable Google organic or local visibility for a defined query set, how often do the same brands appear when comparable recommendation-style prompts are asked in AI-assisted experiences?
We care about disagreement: cases where classic search looks healthy but AI recommendations name someone else — and the reverse.
This study covers a locked observational window and a fixed industry set in Ontario. Numbers below are the approved aggregates for that window — nothing more.

Design is observational and competitive. We do not buy placements in third-party AI products, and we do not claim a private ranking formula for ChatGPT, Google AI experiences, or similar systems.
These are the approved headline results for the Jan–Aug 2026 Ontario panel. We do not invent correlations beyond what these counts support.

| Top-3 businesses mentioned by AI | 351 |
| Top-3 businesses not mentioned by AI | 287 |

| Businesses never mentioned by AI | 776 |
Key takeaway: ranking Top 3 on Google does not guarantee an AI mention. Of 638 businesses in Google Top 3, 287 (45.0%) were not mentioned by AI.
A healthy Google Top-3 position still left nearly half of those businesses unmentioned in the AI questions we analyzed. At the same time, 447 businesses outside Google Top 3 were mentioned by AI — so AI visibility is not a simple mirror of classic rankings.
Overall, 1,224 of 2,000 businesses (61.2%) received at least one AI mention; 776 were never mentioned. These counts describe co-occurrence in this panel. They are not a claim that Google rankings cause or prevent AI mentions, and they are not a ranking formula for any third-party AI product.
AI answers change. Prompt wording, geography, personalization, and model updates can alter who gets named. A single study window is not a permanent ranking.
Google visibility and AI recommendations are imperfectly comparable: one is largely a results-page race; the other is a compressed answer. We describe disagreement carefully instead of forcing a fake correlation coefficient.
Compare yourself with the competitors customers actually consider across search, maps, reviews, website proof, and AI-assisted discovery. A strong Google position is useful — but it is not the same as being named when someone asks AI who to hire.
