Methodology

Businesses were sourced from the Historic Third Ward Association public directory. National chains, businesses without websites, and civic listings were excluded so the benchmark reflects local independent businesses.

This benchmark uses the 433 listings in the Historic Third Ward Association directory extract on October 15, 2026. Questions were asked on October 16, 2026.

1,658 ChatGPT questions were asked across 241 unique prompts. Questions were matched to each business's category and pinned to Milwaukee at the city level.

Each business received approximately 6 questions. Questions were not averaged across multiple runs. This study used ChatGPT (OpenAI) on October 16, 2026.

Of the 433 listings, 57 had no usable website: 41 had no website listed, and 16 listed only Facebook, LinkedIn, a booking page, a condo portal, or the Public Market site. Another 81 were not eligible: 44 national or multi-location chains, 29 civic or institutional listings, and 8 duplicate listings. Of the 295 eligible members, 28 could not be confidently matched to a Milwaukee Google Business Profile and were not asked, leaving 267 scored. Questions were pinned to Milwaukee at the city level. They were not restricted to the Historic Third Ward, and no extra map-pin or login location was applied. On the first pass, 40 businesses on Milwaukee Street got no answers because the street name blocked the city setting. They were asked again with the city only, and all 267 businesses were scored. Each question was asked in one run. The Other row is one hotel, The Starling, which was named; hotels fall below the five-business minimum for their own category. In Health, Beauty & Fitness, 18 businesses were strong and 18 were not visible, so the tie counts that category as strong.

This is a point-in-time benchmark of the ChatGPT responses tested on October 16, 2026. This study uses the 433 listings in the Historic Third Ward Association directory extract from October 15, 2026. Scores are the share of scored members named in those answers. ChatGPT answers can change. This is not a guarantee of future mentions, and it does not mean an unnamed business can never appear.

What This Means for Historic Third Ward Association Members

If a customer's shortlist is built in ChatGPT, neighborhood independents that never appear may never get considered.

This research does not claim that appearing in ChatGPT causes a purchase, nor does it prove that an unnamed business cannot succeed. It identifies an emerging layer of local discovery that Historic Third Ward Association members may want to understand.
