Example Responses

Below are sample ChatGPT answers from the test. These examples show which Downtown Boston businesses were named — and which questions returned no Downtown Boston businesses at all.

  • "I'm in Boston — jeweler near me" → E.B. Horn, Barmakian Jewelers, DePrisco Jewelers
  • "Who should I see for cafe in Boston?" → Thinking Cup, George Howell Coffee
  • "best restaurant in Boston" → O Ya, Neptune Oyster, Oleana, No. 9 Park, Myers + Chang, Uni (no Downtown Boston business appeared)

Spotlight: "best restaurant in Boston"

When asked "best restaurant in Boston", ChatGPT named O Ya, Neptune Oyster, Oleana, No. 9 Park, Myers + Chang, Uni.

No eligible restaurant in the benchmark appeared. Oleana is in Cambridge, a reminder that questions were pinned to Boston as a whole, not to the downtown district.

Methodology

Businesses were sourced from the Downtown Boston Alliance public directory. National chains, businesses without websites, and civic listings were excluded so the benchmark reflects local independent businesses.

This benchmark uses the 439 listings in the Downtown Boston Alliance directory extract on October 15, 2026. Questions were asked on October 16, 2026. The Downtown Boston Alliance is a business improvement district (BID).

1,141 ChatGPT questions were asked across 211 unique prompts. Questions were matched to each business's category and pinned to Boston at the city level.

Each business received approximately 6 questions. Questions were not averaged across multiple runs. This study used ChatGPT (OpenAI) on October 16, 2026.

Of the 439 listings, 100 had no usable website: 59 had no website listed, and 41 listed only a food-hall page, the Corner Mall site, the Alliance site, an ordering page, a directory page, a state page, or a Google Site. High Street Place and the Corner Mall themselves were scored; vendors that only listed the hall or mall website were not. Another 147 were not eligible: 113 national or multi-location chains, 28 civic or institutional listings, and 6 duplicate listings. Of the 192 eligible members, 8 could not be confidently matched to a Boston Google Business Profile and were not asked, leaving 184 scored. That includes a Cambridge campus, matches to a different business, and one listing with no place id. Questions were pinned to Boston at the city level. They were not restricted to the Downtown Boston Alliance district, and no extra map-pin or login location was applied. Each question was asked in one run.

This is a point-in-time benchmark of the ChatGPT responses tested on October 16, 2026. This study uses the 439 listings in the Downtown Boston Alliance directory extract from October 15, 2026. Scores are the share of scored members named in those answers. ChatGPT answers can change. This is not a guarantee of future mentions, and it does not mean an unnamed business can never appear.

What This Means for BID Members

If a customer's shortlist is built in ChatGPT, neighborhood independents that never appear may never get considered.

This research does not claim that appearing in ChatGPT causes a purchase, nor does it prove that an unnamed business cannot succeed. It identifies an emerging layer of local discovery that BID members may want to understand.
