“We’re not on Google” usually means one of three things: you do not appear for the searches customers use, you appear too far down to matter, or you show for your brand name but not for the services that bring new customers.
Google does not owe any business a top spot. Local results are competitive. The useful question is what makes competitors more relevant, closer or more trusted for the same search — and what you can honestly improve.

What local Google results tend to weigh
Google has long described local ranking as influenced by relevance (how well a listing matches the search), distance and prominence (how well-known the business looks online). You cannot force distance. You can improve how clearly you match the search and how credible your presence looks.
That includes categories, services, complete business information, reviews, a website that matches what you do and where you serve, and consistent listings.
Owner checklist before you panic
- Search your service + city on a phone (not only your brand name)
- Confirm Google Business Profile categories and services match how customers speak
- Check that address, phone and hours match your website
- Compare review volume and recency with two real competitors
- Make sure your website has clear service and location pages Google can crawl
- Fix NAP mismatches on major listings
Maps pack vs regular results
The map pack and classic blue links are related but not identical races. A strong website can help both; a neglected Business Profile can sink Maps even when the site looks fine. Treat them as connected, not interchangeable.
AI answers are another layer
Even when you improve classic Google visibility, customers may also ask AI who to hire nearby. Showing up in Google and being recommended in an AI answer are related readiness problems, not the same guarantee. Related: /resources/can-chatgpt-find-my-business.
How CLIXERA helps
CLIXERA compares your search and local signals with the competitors currently beating you, then turns the gaps into prioritized work — so you are not improving in a vacuum or guessing which tweak matters.

Questions people ask
Does a website guarantee I show up on Google?
No. A crawlable, clear website helps, but local visibility also depends on relevance, distance, prominence and competitors.
How long until I show up?
It depends on competition and how large the gap is. Treat it as ongoing improvement, not a one-weekend flip.
